Hello guys and gals.
Just arrived (2 weeks ago actually) at beautiful Sydney and am starting to get to know the "underwater" family of NSW.
As a short CV: My name is Phoevos, I am a passionate spearo and am here for a PhD in the USyd (one of the reasons I actually chose Australia, was the sea ). I've been spearing for the last 12 years of my life systematically (into the water actually since my 8years), member of AIDA Hellas in Greece and hopefully future member of NSUC (damn, I missed that bus yesterday ).
Some of my catches while I was in Greece:
last day before I leave home. . .
freediving comes into play, quite some times
Greetings to all of you, I hope we can share stories from different hemispheres of the planet.

that is an absolute cannon of a gun in your pics! I'm heading the other way in 23days... over into the med. Hopefully spearing the canary islands etc. but also heading to Greece at some stage too. Looking forward to some calm clear water to dive in, I've always heard there aren't any fish left over there. Hopefully chasing dentex when I go, would love to shoot one!!!! beautiful shots! _________________ Safe, Sustainable, Selective Hunting....
@Johnsnails: Thank you mate! I feel welcome from the first time i step my foot on the ground at the airport. Australians are very friendly people .
@Stealth: Yap, my baby is a canon! It wears 4 16mm bands (it takes up to 5) and equiped with an 8mm shaft. It weights something like 5.5kilos fully equiped (reel). It's length is something like 1.40+ can't remember (and yes, you can maneuver it underwater ). One thing I know is that the shaft is 1.70m long and it has a reverse triger mechanism. It's one of the beauties Bill Zonomesis makes (handmade).
There are fish in Greece, and definetely A LOT of them. But they are very shy, most often very deep (without that being a general rule) and are not in the same places always. The weather conditions/moon/season makes substantial changes to their numbers, the locations they appear and to their behavior. The general rule is find a rocky place that has very deep water close to the shore (50+, no that does not mean that you will have to fish that deep) and start doing ambush technicque (especially now that you are going on summer). In general at this period Dentex are mostly below the thermocline, so you'll have to get close to 30m (and more perhaps, depends on where you will dive).
Once you have a fixed location to visit (I suggest some of the islands, if you haven't decided I can help with info), msg me and I can tell you spots to fish. Be extremely cautious cause the visibility is very high (30-35m in most places) and you might dive deeper than you think. SWB is the No1 danger in Greece, last week 3 spearos drowned unfortunately (they dived alone). No sharks in Greece, no dangerous creatures, you'll have the best time.
Nice to get to know you guys
Cheers!

oz32nv... if your name is meant to be read as Aussie to envy, I hope that is meant to be a humble or sarcastic joke because I don't know anyone who envies being thought of as a sad F'n loser. I've read your other posts, and if you've got nothing better to do, might I suggest getting a colouring in book, some textas or crayons and a video of the wiggles. If that doesn't work, feel free to go F#ck yourself.
Phoevos: thanks for the info, keen as on those dentex. I might have to try to get some numbers of other divers out there you know. I dive 30-35m now but always with a buddy up top. Really looking forward to it. _________________ Safe, Sustainable, Selective Hunting....
@Ravinggg: thank u reeeeeeeee . It's nice to hear things in your language, thanx mate . And no, helicopters are prohibited by law :p.
@Stealth: Once you get to Greece, let me know. If you stay close to where I have friends (Athens), I may be able to arrange something for you (dive-budy). My friends now lot's of nice places to go diving and some of them may be available. I am sure you can arrange something (spearos, we are all members of the same family).
Cheers mate!
@oz32nv: Hola . The following video shows a computer based simulation of the scale of the observed universe up to today. It'll give you a clue on the size of our planet. A really small planet. Infinitesimally small . A point in space. In fact, you are stepping on my foot as we speak, but it's ok. Laws of nature. No worries friend, ain't here to harm you. Just the laws of nature.
